Quebec SR&ED Tax Credit

Quebec SR&ED Tax Credit. The Canadian governments SR&ED tax incentive program awards companies for conducting R&D in Canada.

The program can reimburse up to 70% of payroll costs incurred by your company as well as subcontract and materials costs.

SR&ED credits are particularly targeted by the government at CCPC’s (Canadian-controlled private corporations). Credit rates are higher for CCPC’s. Credits are refundable (ie all credits delivered as a CRA direct deposit) for CCPC’s.

SR&ED is administered by the CRA. Companies only apply once but receive both large federal SR&ED credits, and smaller provincial credits. In Quebec, SR&ED credits are particularly lucrative. Unlike other provinces which issue smaller provincial credits, Quebec issues 0 credits on the first 50k of expenses but significantly larger credits on every dollar claimed over $50 000. This makes Quebec great for large SR&ED claims. Quebec also issues refundable credits for large companies not just CCPC’s.

Many companies fail to make an SRED claim because they falsely assume that the program is restricted to “High Tech” companies. The fact is that any company likely has SR&ED activities going on at any given time. If some of your staff are engaged in solving technological problems for which a solution is not readily apparent, there is a good chance that the work they are doing is fully or partially eligible for SRED credits. In many cases, the companies who receive SRED credits might be considered relatively “low tech” such as agriculture or manufacturing companies.
